  1. Radiator

  3. The radiator is
  4. designed to cool
  5. off the hot water
  6. that comes from the
  7. engine.  It does
  8. this by passing the
  9. water through a
  10. myriad of small
  11. tubes.  The fan
  12. sucks air over the
  13. tubes and heat is
  14. dissipated from the
  15. water. 
  16.  
  17. Hot water is pumped
  18. in at the top of
  19. the radiator and
  20. cool water is drawn
  21. from the bottom, to
  22. go into the engine
  23. block and cool it
  24. off.  The
  25. thermostat
  26. regulates how fast
  27. the water flows
  28. through the
  29. radiator.  For
  30. example: when the
  31. car is started in
  32. the morning, the
  33. coolant is cold,
  34. and the car is not
  35. at its optimal
  36. operating
  37. temperature.  The
  38. thermostat will
  39. remain closed until
  40. the engine block
  41. has reached the
  42. optimal operating
  43. temperature, and
  44. then it will open
  45. to let the water
  46. flow and prevent
  47. overheating.
